125 Years of Research

125 Years of Research Excellence: A Legacy of Discovery. A Future of Precision Medicine.

When Temple University School of Pharmacy was founded in 1901, its mission was radical in its simplicity: education should be accessible to those with talent,  determination, and a desire to serve, regardless of economic circumstance. Located in the heart of North Philadelphia, Temple quickly became a gateway of opportunity for working-class students committed to healing, science, and community. That founding principle, access paired with ambition, remains the bedrock of Temple
Pharmacy’s identity.

For decades, the school cultivated excellence in pharmacy practice, ethics, and patient-centered care. As the pharmaceutical sciences evolved, so too did Temple. What began as a practice-focused institution steadily transformed into a research-driven engine of discovery, innovation, and translational impact.

The modern research trajectory accelerated in the 1990s, marking what we now recognize as a foundational era of scientific expansion. Faculty advanced the science of drug formulation, pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and rational analgesic therapy. Investigators contributed to national conversations in opioid pharmacology, antimicrobial stewardship, and therapeutic optimization. These early research investments established Temple’s credibility in pharmaceutical sciences and created the structural backbone for the molecular advances that would follow.

In the early 21st century, Temple entered a mechanistic and molecular era. The recruitment of pharmacologists, medicinal chemists, translational scientists, and  molecular biologists deepened the school’s scientific rigor and extramural funding. The Jayne Haines Center for Pharmacogenomics and Drug Safety advanced personalized medicine and marked the emergence of translational science at the School of Pharmacy. Research programs expanded into oxidative stress biology, kinase signaling, neurodegeneration, new formulations, and metabolic disease pathways. NIH-supported investigations flourished, positioning Temple as a contributor not only to clinical practice but to fundamental biological and chemical discovery. The addition of the Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research accelerated therapeutic development across cancer, CNS disorders, and metabolic disease.

By the mid-2010s, Temple Pharmacy had matured into a fully integrated translational research enterprise. Landmark discoveries bridged human physiology and molecular insight. Advances in antimicrobial resistance outcomes research and opioid stewardship further demonstrated Temple’s capacity to translate discovery into meaningful clinical and societal impact.

Today, Temple Pharmacy stands firmly in an era defined by precision and platform science. Novel biologics, CRISPR-based genome editing systems, lipid  nanoparticle modeling, spatial proteomics, advanced drug delivery, ground-breaking pharmacokinetic modeling, pharmacogenomics, clinical science, and AI-guided health outcome and drug discovery are reshaping the research landscape.

Methodology for Selection of Publications

The publications highlighted below were selected based on citation counts of individual papers retrieved from indexed scholarly databases, including PubMed,
Google Scholar, and Dimensions. The goal was to apply a consistent and transparent metric that reflects the measurable scholarly influence of specific publications rather than evaluating individual investigators.

Using citation impact allowed the list to focus on peer-reviewed publications including original research articles that have had demonstrable influence within the scientific literature and across the pharmaceutical sciences. This approach provides a straightforward and objective method for identifying publications that have contributed substantially to advancing knowledge in their respective fields. Other markers of the school’s impact on scholarship and discovery are in other formats for celebration.

Temple University School of Pharmacy faculty, students, and postdoctoral residents and fellows are italicized in bold. Publications that include corresponding authors from Temple University and Temple University School of Pharmacy are highlighted.
