Peter Doukas, PhD, spent more than 50 years at the School of Pharmacy as a scientist, educator and administrator. He was appointed acting dean in 1990 and dean in 1993. Dr. Doukas’s tenure was defined by a commitment to accessible, high-quality education – especially for underserved and first-generation students. His philosophy was simple: provide opportunities for students to transform their lives and those of their families, fulfilling Temple’s mission of creating economic opportunities for its graduates.
His leadership resulted in the transition of TUSP’s pharmacy program to a doctoral degree; development of the first and largest graduate program in regulatory affairs and quality assurance in the United States; establishment of the Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research; and, introduction of the Temple University Drug Discovery Research Initiative, spawning five start-up companies.
He received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1997 celebrating his legacy of teaching excellence, and the Champion of Research Award from the University in 2020 honoring his service and support of research initiatives. Dr. Doukas was instrumental in the formation of 50 endowed funds, including 40 scholarships - a result of his tireless collaborative partnerships with colleagues and donors.
