Joseph B. Sprowls, Ph.D.

Dr. Sprowls was a native of Colorado and attended the University of Colorado where he earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. He joined the faculty of the School of Pharmacy in 1948, following three years as a professor at the University of Buffalo and four years as a faculty member at the University of Colorado. He became dean in 1950, serving with distinction in that position until 1967 when he assumed a similar position at the University of Texas.

Upon his departure from Temple, he was remembered as an excellent teacher, capable researcher and superior administrator.

The annual Joseph B. Sprowls Lecture Award was established by the School of Pharmacy Alumni Association in conjunction with TUSP in memory and recognition of Dean Sprowls and his contribution to the school, the university and the profession.

Over the years Dr. Sprowls was involved in many professional organizations, sat on numerous committees and boards and received many honors. He authored numerous articles and chapters on teaching methods, dispensing procedures, testing techniques and ophthalmic solutions. Dr. Sprowls was editor of two outstanding textbooks American Pharmacy and Prescription Pharmacy.
