125 Heroes: Salvatore Turco

Salvatore Turco

Dr. Salvatore Turco served as a professor at the School of Pharmacy from 1968 to 2004 and was widely recognized as a leader in the field. He co-authored multiple editions of Sterile Dosage Forms: Their Preparation and Clinical Application and published numerous research and review articles, including work featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Pharmacy Practice.

In 1971, he notably helped save a patient with mushroom poisoning by using an innovative pharmaceutical intervention to preserve organ function until the appropriate antidote arrived at Temple University Hospital. He also held a patent for a widely used sterility assay kit that remains in use in hospitals worldwide.

Dr. Turco was a longtime advisor to the APhA-ASP chapter at Temple University School of Pharmacy and continued mentoring pharmacists and educators well into retirement. He was highly regarded by colleagues and students alike.

The Dr. Salvatore J. Turco Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 2021 by Michael R. Cohen (PHM ’68, ’84), honors his legacy. The fund supports Temple pharmacy students who demonstrate excellence in laboratory practice, particularly in parenteral pharmacy.
