Sonak Pastakia '04

Dr. Sonak Pastakia received his PharmD from TUSP in 2004. He completed his clinical pharmacy residencies at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, earned his master’s in public health from Harvard University, and a PhD from the University of Warwick. Dr. Pastakia is currently a tenured professor at Purdue University College of Pharmacy and associate director for the Center for Health Excellence, Quality, Innovation.

Since 2010, he has served as the team leader for the Purdue Kenya Partnership at the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH Kenya), one of the largest HIV care programs globally. In this leadership role, Dr. Pastakia has co-created a clinical pharmacy program that has supported the care of 457,833 Kenyan patients and one of the largest chronic disease management programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Pastakia has also created rigorous experiential training opportunities to provide meaningful clinical pharmacy practice opportunities for more than 450 pharmacy trainees from the US and Kenya. Many of his former trainees are now using their training to address the needs of underserved populations in Kenya and the US.

To date, Dr. Pastakia has successfully generated more than $8.2 million in research grant funding. Together with a group of distinguished researchers, he has disseminated > 300 peer reviewed manuscripts, posters, and oral presentations.

For his dedication to pharmacy practice and population health, Dr. Pastakia was awarded with a 2017-2018 Jefferson Science Fellowship from the National Academies and the ACCP Clinical Practice Award in 2023.
