He completed a Pharmacy Practice residency at Temple University Hospital in 1998.
Dr. McDonnell received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2006 and was named a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in 2014. He serves on the editorial board of the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority and has collaborated with the National
Association of Boards of Pharmacy and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. His scholarly work includes numerous publications and presentations focused on drug-induced disease, medication safety, and adverse drug reactions.
His teaching philosophy, “keeping it real,” emphasizes the pharmacist’s role in preventing drug-related harm, drawing on both his professional experience and his work as a medical-legal expert, primarily representing patients harmed by drug therapy. He has also mentored 105 student-authored case reports on drug-induced conditions, many of which have been presented at regional and national pharmacy meetings.
