Temple University School of Pharmacy recognized five student pharmacists as this year's recipients of the Sam Maddula Scholarship during PREP Week 2026. The scholarship, established by Sam Maddula, PharmD, founder and CEO of Workshop Strategy, honors current pharmacy students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in service to underserved populations. This mission reflects the philosophy and journey of Sam Maddula and the values the Temple Pharmacy has upheld throughout its 125-year history. 

This year's honorees - David Baidoo, Jonathan Chan, Matthew Galanaugh, Julianne Le, and Andrew Rudenko - represent the breadth of what community-centered pharmacy leadership looks like at Temple. 

David Baidoo (PY3) has spent the past year at the center of Temple's outreach efforts in North Philadelphia, leading the Bridging the Gaps program in summer 2025 to deliver health literacy and healthcare access programming to local residents. He also serves as an educator at the Temple Lenfest Community Center, working with youth and adults, and as legislative chair for the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), where he advocates for pharmacy access among immigrant and international students. Baidoo has presented his research on healthcare literacy in underserved communities at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and gained clinical experience across diverse patient populations at UPenn Hospital, Jefferson Moss-Magee, and Blue Cross. He began his term as SNPhA Vice President in May 2026 and is a member of Phi Lambda Sigma and the Tri-Alpha Honor Society. 

Jonathan Chan (PY3), Vice President of the Philadelphia Pharmacists in Health Systems Organization (PPHSO), has organized pharmacy outreach tables at community events, including a health fair at Zion Baptist Church and a Men's Mental Health Awareness event. Fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, Chan brings firsthand awareness of the language barriers that shape healthcare access, informed by his earlier work serving West Philadelphia's diverse community at Sunray Drugs. His path to pharmacy was shaped by what he witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic — an experience that continues to drive his commitment to closing gaps in care. Chan also serves as Historian-Elect of Rho Chi and is a student member of APIC. 

Matthew Galanaugh (PY3) has built an expansive service portfolios, including interning with Oaks of Hope International to support survivors of human trafficking, abuse, and addiction using a trauma-informed care framework. As co-chair of the 125 Acts of Service initiative, he has mobilized school-wide community service events across Philadelphia, and as a Script Your Future student leader, he has led medication adherence campaigns for economically diverse patients. As a PREP Student Ambassador, he has led efforts to create a culture of belonging for incoming pharmacy students. Galanaugh, an Eagle Scout with a City of Philadelphia citation, serves as SGA President, and President-Elect of Phi Lambda Sigma. 

Julianne Le (PY4) has led sustained service on stroke awareness and health literacy in Philadelphia's Vietnamese community through IMPACT-Viet Capacity since January 2024, presenting her work at Research Recognition Day. As SNPhA Vice President and Operation Heart Chair, she has developed culturally relevant cardiovascular health education for residents living in North Philadelphia's food deserts, including a produce distribution event with Sharing Excess that served roughly 200 residents. Le also helped coordinate a COVID-19 vaccination site that served more than 500 patients, including Vietnamese-speaking residents with limited English proficiency. 

Andrew Rudenko (PY4) has focused his pharmacy career on closing language-driven gaps in care, from his community rotation at a Rite Aid in Hunting Park to his prior work as an informal Spanish interpreter for patients during his time as a CVS pharmacy technician. Rudenko, who holds a DELE C1 Spanish certification, rebuilt a near-inactive chapter of the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists into an active organization and now serves as its president, alongside leadership roles in Rho Chi and Phi Delta Chi. 

Temple University School of Pharmacy formally honored all five recipients at a ceremony on August 20, 2026.
