Komal Kumar, PharmD/MBA ’26, has been named the 2026 recipient of the John F. (“Jack”) Schlegel Leadership Development Award, presented by the Pharmacy Leadership & Education Institute (PLEI). The national award recognizes a graduating student pharmacist who demonstrates outstanding leadership, service, professionalism and the potential to make lasting contributions to the pharmacy profession.
Kumar is the second consecutive Temple University School of Pharmacy graduate to receive the prestigious honor, highlighting the school's continued commitment to developing leaders who are advancing the pharmacy profession.
Established in honor of pharmacy leader and mentor Dr. John F. (“Jack”) Schlegel, the award celebrates students whose leadership reflects a commitment to advancing patient care and the profession.
Throughout her time at Temple University School of Pharmacy, Kumar has built an impressive record of leadership, scholarship and service. She has served as vice president and acting president of the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity, helping guide the organization through periods of transition while fostering professional development and community engagement among members.
Kumar has also held leadership positions as president of Temple's Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy chapter, treasurer of the Student Government Association and a delegate for the Student National Pharmaceutical Association. In addition to her campus involvement, she has contributed to research focused on medication safety and patient outcomes, earning recognition for presentations and publications.
"Komal exemplifies the qualities this award was created to recognize," said Kevin Anderson, chair of the PLEI Awards Committee. "Her ability to lead through service, inspire those around her and remain committed to improving healthcare for patients demonstrates the character, resilience and vision that Dr. Schlegel championed throughout his career."
This summer, Kumar will begin a two-year fellowship with Eli Lilly, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Butler University, where she will focus on global pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs and pharmacy education. She hopes to help shape drug safety policy and strengthen systems that improve patient safety, particularly for underserved communities.
